Licensing in Alberta
To practice physiotherapy in Alberta and use the title physiotherapist/ physical therapist an individual must have a valid practice permit (license) from Physiotherapy Alberta. A physiotherapist's registration and practice permit may be verified online.
There are three types of registers for practicing physiotherapists.
General Register:
- meets all registration requirements
- may use title physiotherapist or initials PT
- must review practice permit annually
- may have conditions attached to license
- may, if authorized, perform a restricted activity
Provisional Register:
- passed written component of the Physiotherapy Competency Exam but not passed clinical component
- may practice only under supervision
- must use title physiotherapist intern
- registration may not exceed two years or two exam failures
Courtesy:
- requires limited entry to Alberta for an approved purpose
- practice limited to approved purpose
- may, if authorized, perform a restricted activity
