Licensing in Alberta

To practice physiotherapy in Alberta and use the title physiotherapist/ physical therapist an individual must have a valid practice permit (license) from Physiotherapy Alberta. A physiotherapist's registration and practice permit may be verified online.

There are three types of registers for practicing physiotherapists.

General Register:

  • meets all registration requirements
  • may use title physiotherapist or initials PT
  • must review practice permit annually
  • may have conditions attached to license
  • may, if authorized, perform a restricted activity


Provisional Register:

  • passed written component of the Physiotherapy Competency Exam but not passed clinical component
  • may practice only under supervision
  • must use title physiotherapist intern
  • registration may not exceed two years or two exam failures

 
Courtesy:

  • requires limited entry to Alberta for an approved purpose
  • practice limited to approved purpose
  • may, if authorized, perform a restricted activity
