Physiotherapists

Courtesy register

Registration on the courtesy register is available to physiotherapists currently registered in another jurisidiction requiring temporary entry to Alberta in order to meet the mandatory registration requirements of the Health Professions Act.

  • Registration is for a specific time and purpose.
  • The person remains registered as a physiotherapist in good standing in their originating jurisdiction.
  • Satisfies the Registrar they are competent to provide services related to the approved purpose.
  • The term does not exceed one year.


There are three categories.

Visiting clinician

Physiotherapists providing professional services directly to the public:

  • at a sporting event (physiotherapists traveling with a group (e.g., sports team) and providing services only to that contingent do not need to be registered)
  • during a major public health event (e.g., pandemic)
  • as an exchange program participant


Visiting instructor

Physiotherapist instructor:

  • providing physiotherapy instruction or demonstration involving direct patient contact 
  • performing a restricted activity


Visiting learner

Course participant performing a restricted activity while at a course.

All applicants must provide:

  • Registration checklist outlining how you will meet Alberta's registration requirements.
  • Reference from the jurisdiction where you are currently registered to confirm license status and discipline history.
  • Evidence of proficiency in the English language.
  • Photo ID such as a current driver's license or passport and evidence of name change if any documents are in a different name than application.
  • Complete application form.
     

Processing time

We will acknowledge receipt of your application via email within three working days and give you an electronic link where you can monitor your application status.
