How to Become Licensed in Alberta

Mandatory registration

To practice physiotherapy in Alberta and use the title physiotherapist or physical therapist you must be registered and have a valid practice permit (i.e., license) from Physiotherapy Alberta.


There are three registers for practicing physiotherapists.

General register:

  • meets all registration requirements
  • may use title physiotherapist or initials PT
  • must renew practice permit annually
  • may or may not have conditions attached to practice permit
  • may, if authorized, perform a restricted activity


Provisional register:

  • passed the written component of the Physiotherapy Competency Exam but not passed the clinical component
  • may practice only under supervision
  • must use title physiotherapist intern
  • registration may not exceed 2 years or 2 exam failures

 
Courtesy register:

  • requires limited entry to Alberta for an approved purpose
  • practice limited to approved purpose
  • may, if authorized, perform a restricted activity
