Paying for Physiotherapy
Don’t wait for a referral. Visit a physiotherapist as soon as pain or discomfort gets in your way.
Payment for physiotherapy treatment varies depending on the situation. Ask about payment options when booking an appointment or inquiring about physiotherapy services.
Extended health benefit plans
Physiotherapy treatment is usually covered in employer paid or individually purchased health benefit plan. Check your plan for coverage details and if your insurer requires a doctor referral for reimbursement.
Alberta Health Services (AHS) coverage
You need physiotherapy but cannot leave home because of health issues. You may be eligible for home care services. Call HEALTHLink Alberta for details:
- Calgary: 403.943.5465
- Edmonton: 780.408.5465
- Toll free: 1.866.408.5464
You are able to visit a physiotherapy clinic. Coverage varies and there may be a wait for service because of coverage limits and high demand. To find AHS funded physiotherapy services in your area, visit Alberta Health Service’s website and search for physiotherapy.
Workers’ Compensation Board (WCB) coverage
You are injured at work. WCB will normally approve up to 21 treatment visits over six weeks. WCB pays for the first treatment but remaining visits are only paid after WCB accepts your claim. WCB allows you to go to a physiotherapist directly, but you need to visit a doctor to have your claim processed.
Automobile insurance
You are injured in a car accident. Seek treatment within 10 days of your accident. Your insurance company will normally pre-approve up to 21 treatment visits over a 12 week period. You can visit a physiotherapist directly – there is no need to wait for a referral. For more information, see the Government of Alberta’s information for consumers - what to do after an auto collision.
Direct payment
If you are not eligible for coverage, then you must pay for treatment directly. Confirm fees when booking as fees vary between physiotherapy clinics.
