Back Pain In Adults - Get Moving and Stay Active
Low back pain is a common condition. If you suffer back pain, then you are not alone! Almost 7 in 10 Canadians will experience back pain at some point in their life. The pain can range from a mild annoyance to completely disrupting your life.
Research over the past 10-15 years has consistently demonstrated that remaining active is the best way to get better faster. Despite this, many back pain sufferers are hesitant to exercise because it hurts to move. Whether you’re recovering from back pain or trying to maintain a healthy back, being active, stronger and more flexible will help.
Here are some general tips if you have back pain.
- Avoid bed rest. Bed rest delays recovery.
- Keep moving. Try walking or gentle stretching movements. Gradually increase your activity each day.
- Watch how you sit. Sitting is often very painful. Sit-up straight, use a lumbar support and try not to sit longer than 10-15 minutes before moving.
- Watch how you lift. Carry the object as close as possible, keep your back straight and reduce the amount of bending and twisting.
- Watch your sleeping posture. If you lie on your side, try placing a small pillow under your waist and between your knees. If you lie on you back, place a small pillow under your back and under your knees.
