June 2020 Leadership Message
Summer greetings from Physiotherapy Alberta - College + Association!
Our Council welcomed William Tung and Grant Fedoruk as two new members at our June meeting. William Tung is an internationally trained physiotherapist who upgraded to a Bachelors of Science in Physiotherapy at the University of Alberta in 1994. He currently works as a professional practice leader at the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Edmonton. He has helped train many physiotherapy students over the years, including myself!
Grant Fedoruk earned his physiotherapy degree at the University of Alberta in 1999. He owns Leading Edge Physiotherapy and is very active in Edmonton's business community. Grant has been on Council before in various roles including Council President.
William and Grant join elected members Simon Cooke, Amarjit Mann, Christina van der Lught, and myself, as well as our government appointed public members Dennis Horrigan and Sharon Sproule.
Council meets four times per year to set policy and provide strategic direction to our organization. I look forward to working with the 2020/2021 Council Members and thank all the Alberta physiotherapists who put their names forward in this year's election.
At our June meeting, Council discussed how the COVID-19 pandemic has affected physiotherapy in Alberta. Current students have switched to distance learning and are struggling to find clinical placements admist staffing cuts and program changes at the University of Alberta. Provisional registrants are struggling to maintain caseloads while anxiously awaiting resumption of the clinical component of the Physiotherapy Competence Exam. Outpatient clinicians are creatively modifying business practices to comply with public health orders, and hospital-based physiotherapists are taking on new roles and being redeployed to help with tasks such as site screening and swabbing.
In the coming months, physiotherapy will undoubtably continue to experience and adapt to various challenges and Physiotherapy Alberta will continue to provide necessary resources and guidance. Thank you to all our members for sharing ideas and seeking help when needed. Together we will endure these challenging times.
Sincerely, Karin Eldred
