Volunteer Opportunities: Various Committees

  •   July 5, 2019

Physiotherapy Alberta currently has three volunteer opportunities.

Complaints Review Committee

A complainant may seek a review of the Complaints Director’s decision to dismiss their complaint. The request for review is considered by the Complaints Review Committee. The review process serves as a check and balance on the Complaints Director’s broad discretion in disposing complaints.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 10 years active physiotherapy practice
  • Not the subject of a current investigation at time of application
  • Having no findings of professional misconduct in any regulated health profession
  • Can attend training and meetings during the Monday-Friday work week

To achieve an ideal broad member representation, committee members are also selected to reflect the profession’s diverse practice settings, geographic regions, varying levels/types of experience and demographics.

Hearing Tribunal

The Hearing Tribunal has a statutory obligation to hold hearings under the Health Professions Act (HPA) to consider allegations on unskilled practice or unprofessional conduct. The Hearing Tribunal’s mandate is triggered when the Hearings Director receives a referral from the Complaints Director or Complaints Review Committee. The Hearing Tribunal must determine whether the allegations are proven based on the evidence presented at the hearing. If there are findings, the Hearing Tribunal must determine what orders, in accordance with the HPA, are imposed on the physiotherapist.
